For Derik D. Coffey, CFA, Channing Capital Management's Client Portfolio Manager and Director of Quantitative Analysis, and newly elected board member of the CFA Society of Chicago, the journey to success was fueled by a deep desire to move beyond the monotony of a nine-to-five job and into a role focused on long-term value creation. Passionate about investing and helping clients navigate market cycles, he found that the most meaningful conversations often happened during turbulent times—when thoughtful analysis and clear communication mattered most. Inspired by mentors, especially his father’s disciplined military background, he embraced a methodical approach to his career, integrating politics, economics, and finance into his decision-making.
However, a pivotal moment came when he realized he had missed his daughter’s first smiles, prompting a shift in perspective. Balancing a demanding career with family life, he now recognizes the importance of slowing down and appreciating life’s milestones. Just as in jiujitsu, where growth comes from both challenge and patience, he believes young professionals should focus on process and discipline while also taking time to enjoy their successes along the way. If he could advise his younger self, he’d say: don’t just chase the next goal—celebrate the ride.
