Channing Capital: An Entrepreneurial Legacy of Opportunity and Impact
As featured in SAVOY magazine...
At a time when investors are searching for overlooked opportunities and trusted partners who put people before profits, Channing Capital Management offers something refreshingly different: a boutique investment firm with deep expertise, a disciplined approach, and a culture built to stand the test of time.
Finding Value Where Others Aren’t Looking
More than two decades ago, three visionary investment professionals—Rodney B. Herenton, Wendell E. Mackey, CFA, and Eric T. McKissack, CFA (retired)—stepped away from the well-worn paths of Wall Street to chart a new course. Their mission was to build a firm dedicated to uncovering hidden value and helping clients grow lasting wealth. In 2003, Channing Capital was born, starting with an initial seed investment of $70 million, the firm has grown to over $4B in assets under management today.

From day one, Channing’s founders carved out a clear niche: the less-traveled terrain of U.S. small- and mid-cap value stocks. While the firm remains deeply committed to our flagship Small Cap Value strategy, it has also evolved to meet the changing needs of its clients. That evolution includes broadening its reach through the launch of affiliate Channing Global Advisors in 2017—extending the firm’s investment universe to international and global markets—and, in 2023, offering clients access to direct private investments in the lower middle market through an investment in Preserver Partners through our affiliate Channing Alternatives. These thoughtful expansions underscore Channing’s commitment to uncovering new sources of opportunity wherever they exist. Earlier this year, that commitment was recognized when Channing Global Advisors was named 2025’s top manager in the International Equity category of Emerging Manager Monthly’s Emerging Manager Awards.

A Culture That Powers Performance
If Channing’s investment strategies reflect its appetite for opportunity, its culture reveals the soul of the firm. Since its founding, the team has operated with a clear set of principles: put people first, sweat the details, value every voice, and stay accountable. These values shape the way Channing’s portfolio managers meet face-to-face with clients, the way the firm sets capacity limits to protect performance, and the way every decision is made with care and purpose.
As co-founder Wendell Mackey puts it, “When we launched Channing, we wanted to build a firm where every decision was made with integrity, every voice mattered, and every client relationship felt personal. That vision still guides us today.”
Diversity is woven into this culture by design. Different backgrounds and perspectives power richer debates and more thoughtful investment decisions—a strategic advantage that ultimately benefits Channing’s clients.
Impact That Reaches Beyond Returns
But for Channing, success isn’t just measured in returns. From supporting local nonprofits to creating scholarships and internships that open doors to the next generation of investors, giving back is simply part of the firm’s DNA. As co-founder Rodney Herenton describes it: “It’s about doing what’s right, not what’s marketable.”
More than twenty years on, Channing Capital remains proof that small can be mighty—and that investing with intention, discipline, and a collaborative spirit can help shape stronger futures for individuals, institutions, and communities for generations to come.
